- 1.3. What is an A3640?
- ======================
-
- The A3640 is a daughterboard that carries a 25Mhz 68040 CPU and comes as
- standard equipment with a A4000 '040. The board not only fits into the
- FAST-Slot of an A4000 but also in the one that the A3000 comes with. It
- can therefore be used as an accelerator for an A4000 '030 (replacing the
- daughterboard with the 68030 CPU) or an A3000 (putting the board in the
- empty FAST-Slot).

- =========
-
- 2.1. How to prevent your A3000 from overheating.
- ================================================
-
- Unfortunately the 68040 gets somewhat hotter that a 68030. Even more
- unfortunately some of the chips in the A3000 don't like heat so much. I
- measured 35 deg Celsius airtemperature just outside the power-suply fan and
- 45 deg Celsius just beside the 68040.
-
- Radiating heat: The A3640 comes with a mounted aluminium heat radiator.
- Aparently there are two version. One (the early version) that is to high
- to fit in the A3000 and a flatter one that fits also in the A3000. It is
- not necessary to cut a hole in the drive-mounting frame to make fit the
- higher radiator. Just replace the radiator with a smaller one. With a
- little luck (also called "searching") you'll find one that can even be held
- in place with the same clamp that held the original radiator. You might
- also want to put some heat-conducting paste between the 68040 and the
- radiator to have an optimum flow of heat between them.
-
- Airflow: Have a look at the back of your A3000. You'll notice the fan of
- the power-suply on one side and a couple of small holes one the far other
- side. The air is sucked in through the small holes beside the back-planes,
- passes the expansion-cards, gets sucked through the gap that is between the
- slot-daughterboard and the front-panel (see schematics below), and finally
- gets blown out by the big fan of the power-suply.
-
- There are two ways to enhance air-flow:
-
- 1. Get a "CPU-Cooler" with fan. Make sure the fan can be removed from the
- aluminium cooling cap. Remove the fan from the cap an place it in the gap
- that is between the slot-daufhterboard and the front-panel. Use some glue
- or tape to fix it there. make shure it blows the air to the right side.
- Connect it to a free power-cord from the power-suply. You might want to
- remove one alle unused back-planes to increase air-flow.
-
- 2. Do the same as describend in 1. but remove the back-planes and place
- the fan at the BBB location. Place it so the air is blown into the case.

- Hi Jaeson, you wrote a message dated 18-1-95
- about { A3000 + A3640 } saying:
-
- jep> Besides the necessary drive mount modifications, what else is necessary
- jep> to use an A3640 with an A3000. Are there jumpers to change?
-
- Some quotes from Dave Haynie:
-
- 1) A Rev 3.1 or later A3640. Prior versions can fail with a DMA
- conflict (they let the CPU and DMA device onto the '030 bus at
- the same time).
-
- 2) One of: later-than-2.04 OS in ROM, RAMSEY Rev G, or at least
- one page-mode DRAM in bank 0 of your Fast RAM array. There's a
- bug in the original RAMSEY that fails when page-detect mode is
- set up. OS 2.04 enables page-detect mode when you have static
- column memories and an '040.
-
- 3) You may need a Rev D DMAC, which implies a Rev G RAMSEY anyway
- (they are paired; you can't use old DMACs with new RAMSEYs or
- vice-versa). Early DMACs, especially the Rev A, were very heat
- sensitive. The reason C= doesn't recommend the A3640 for the
- A3000 is that the '040 runs hot, intentionally. Up to 115C Tj
- is just fine. We didn't know this when the A3000 casework was
- designed, most chips only go up to 70C.
-
- >From that you may gather that it may be adviseable to put an extra fan
- inside to blow more air past the 3640. Also you need to change some
- motherboard jumpers: J100 (3-4), J102 (1-2), and leave J104 (1-2).
-
- You should also look at upgrading your Buster to -11, and your WD33C93A SCSI
- controller chip to 00-08 or equivalent (AMD make the same chip).

-
- Another $0.02 into A3640 thread: I finally made this beast working
- into my A3000/16, after spending several days trying whatever was
- suggested.
-
- What to do:
-
- - Install 3.1 ROMS (40.68), first chip into U181, second one in U180, whether
- you have ROM tower (motherboards versions 7.x) or not.
- - Buster does not need to be upgraded (I have rev 7).
- - Change jumpers J100 to 3-4, J102 to 1-2 (an earlier post said not to
- move this one, well here I'm speaking about an A3000/16Mhz, motherboard
- version 7.0), and finally move jumper J104 to 1-2. These are for clock
- handling.
- - Move jumper JP851 (RAM controller speed) to 2-3 (from 16 to 25Mzh).
- - Remove heatsink from 68040 processor and file it up to 1/3 height, so that
- you'll be able to keep it, otherwyse heatsink is too big to fit under
- drive bay.
- - Optionnaly install a very small fan between A3000 daughter board and
- front cover, to cool 68040 a little bit more (I've made a burning test
- for 2 hours without Fan, without any problems, but I just prefer to
- be 100% sure).
- - Install A3640 board (no jumper changes on this one).
-
- Here you are.

- Subject: Re: A3640->A3000 Desktop FAQ? OR Tips?
- [Problems with A3640 in A3000]
-
- I`m using an A3000T-040 with this board...
-
- I had to upgrade the CPU to Dave`s? Rev3.2 (3 PALs),
- new Buster-11, Ramsey-7, DMAC-04.
-
- You won`t be able to upgrade Ramsey,DMAC (because DMAC is not available).
- You`re using a very old A3000. Try to upgrade to the `normal`
- A3000 chipset (Dmac-02, Ramsey-04), a hardkicked OS,
- and fix CPU board to Rev3.2.
-
- Ask for JEDEC-Code of the PALs in this group, if you`re able to
- do them on your own.
- Ask for old A3000 Chips, too.

- Hi Jon,
-
- -> Just purchased an A3640 (040/25) card and having problems
- -> installing/getting it to work in my A3000. Any assistance appreciated
- -> with how to get it going. My system is an A3000/25 with 18 megs RAM.
- -> After installing the board, the system jusst sits - no bootup at all.
- -> Have installed set040 and it make no difference. HELP!!! Are their
- -> some jumper settings that need to be changed?
-
- Don't panic.
-
- J100 - change from 1-2 to 3-4.
- J102 - change from 2-3 to 1-2.
-
- Now officially you should not change J102 - you should change J104, BUT
- it will lock up after 30-45 seconds that way - SO....change J102.
-
-
- If you already don't have it - get the latest 68040.library (37.30) and
- the latest setpatch (40.16).
-
- Besides J100 and J102 you should also know that if you have KS 37.175 in
- ROM you will need at least 1 (one) PAGE mode ZIP chip in Bank 0. If you
- have KS 40.68 or 40.70 (OS 3.1) all Static Column are OK.
-
- If you have "kick" ROMs that load the KS image from HD - forget it - the
- A3640 does NOT work with this ROM set.

- '040 setup.
-

-
- Leaving it alone is your best bet. The '040 doesn't really generate
- external coprocessor cycles, though, so it's probably not going to
- matter which setting it's on.
-
- >You may have a 68LC040, which doesn't have a functional FPU.
-
- That's one possibility. However, it could just as easily be your
- software setup. Part of the '040s FPU standard is implemented in
- software. That software is 68040.library, which is loaded by the
- appropriate SetPatch (eg, don't use an ancient one, but the proper
- up-to-date release is the right one, first thing in the
- Startup-Sequence). If the 68040 library is installed, things like CPU
- will list the '040 as having an FPU, otherwise it won't.
-
- DO NOT RUN THE '040 WITHOUT 68040.LIBRARY!!! The ROM-based Amiga OS
- does not fully support the '040, and you will run into trouble without
- this library. For example, the '040 caches won't be set up properly.
